To arouse students’ interest, the lesson begins with a presentation of two interesting pictures and example sentences about a baby who wants more milk and an old man who wishes to have more teeth. Students are then presented with the story ‘Making Wishes’, in which ‘few’ and ‘little’ are heavily used. The lesson adopts an inductive approach to raise students’ awareness of the different usages of ‘few’ and ‘little’. Students are asked to find out from the story the nouns used after the two determiners and they have to classify them into different groups. Through the comparison, students will be able to master the target structures. The final writing task allows students to use the grammar items to express their own wishes as well as to develop their creativity.

Level of Students: Senior Primary

Lesson Duration: 55 minutes

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this unit, students should be able to:

Identity the difference between the two determiners ‘few’ and ‘little’

Use the two determiners ‘few’ and ‘little’ to write a story on wish making

Lesson Plan: Few & Little (Senior Primary)

Teaching Materials:

Worksheet

PPT

Useful Websites:

https://www.ego4u.com/en/cram-up/vocabulary/little-few

http://dictionary.cambridge.org/grammar/british-grammar/little-a-little-few-a-few

http://www.grammar-quizzes.com/agr_littlefew.html

http://www.tolearnenglish.com/exercises/exercise-english-2/exercise-english-25720.php

Acknowledgements:

We would like to express our gratitude to Lui Ka Man for sending the project team her original lesson plan and allowing us to make modifications to it.

The copyright of the learning materials belongs to The Education University of Hong Kong.
