Students have to deduce the meanings of different prepositions with the use of a text and a treasure map. Since the plan is for junior primary students, their first language is used in the activity so as to ensure their understanding of the meanings of the prepositions. An information gap activity is introduced after the students have deduced the meanings and have shown an understanding of the target prepositions. The communicative activity makes students use the target prepositions in an interesting and purposeful way.

Level of Students: Junior Primary

Lesson Duration: 70 minutes

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this unit, students should be able to:

Differentiate the meanings of different prepositions (i.e. in front of, behind, , between, near and next to)

Describe a map for treasure hunt using different prepositions of place

Lesson Plan: Prepositions (Junior Primary)

Teaching Materials:

Worksheet_(teacher’s version)

Worksheet_(student’s version)

Useful Websites:

https://www.ego4u.com/en/cram-up/grammar/prepositions

http://www.englishpage.com/prepositions/prepositions.html

http://grammar.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/prepositions.htm

Acknowledgements:

We would like to express our gratitude to Li Man Yee for sending the project team her original lesson plan and allowing us to make modifications to it.

The copyright of the learning materials belongs to The Education University of Hong Kong.
