The lesson includes an interesting video as the language input, which is followed by a language exercise developed from it. The amusing video not only increases students’ learning motivation but also shows the meaning of the present continuous tense clearly to students. Acting out is also included in the lesson so as to cater for the needs of kinesthetic learners and to give more fun to the young learners. Students are then asked to do a role-play to practise using the present continuous tense to indicate actions happening currently. Students are given the simulated context that the mother or father who is at work has to make a phone call home to see what the family members are doing. Students who act as the family members will answer the call and tell the parent what they are doing. With different interactive elements included in the lesson, students will be able to use the present continuous tense to talk about actions happening at the moment of speaking.

Level of Students: Junior Primary

Lesson Duration: 40 minutes

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this unit, students should be able to:

Use present continuous tense to indicate something happening at the moment of speaking

Use present continuous tense to indicate what family members are doing at a specific time

Lesson Plan: Present Progressive (Junior Primary)

Teaching Materials:

Worksheet 1

Worksheet 2

PPT

Useful Websites:

https://www.ego4u.com/en/cram-up/grammar/present-progressive

http://www.perfect-english-grammar.com/present-continuous-use.html

https://www.englishclub.com/grammar/verb-tenses_present-continuous.htm

http://www.englishtenses.com/tenses/present_continuous

Acknowledgements:

We would like to express our gratitude to Li Man Yee for sending the project team her original lesson plan and allowing us to make modifications to it.

The copyright of the learning materials belongs to The Education University of Hong Kong.
