This lesson aims at building on students’ prior knowledge and lets students practise using the present progressive to express future arrangements. Students have to work out the meaning expressed by the present progressive in a video shown (i.e. to indicate future plans). The teacher will then present an authentic schedule to demonstrate how to use the present progressive to indicate his/her plan for the week. Pair work is designed to facilitate communication between students. Students in pairs will talk about their own schedules for the coming week. Their task is to find a free time to meet so that they can do an activity together. To make the learning close to students’ daily lives, the follow-up activity requires students to send their friend a text message about their own plans for the weekend / the coming holiday.

Level of Students: Junior Secondary

Lesson Duration: 35 mins

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this unit, students should be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding that the present continuous tense can be used to indicate (1) actions in progress at the time of speaking and (2) future arrangements

Use the present continuous tense to express their future arrangements

Produce a written text (i.e. text message) about students’ own plans for the weekend/ vacation/ future plans

Lesson Plan: Present Progressive (Junior Secondary)

Teaching Materials:

Worksheet

Useful Websites:

https://www.ego4u.com/en/cram-up/grammar/present-progressive

http://www.perfect-english-grammar.com/present-continuous-use.html

https://www.englishclub.com/grammar/verb-tenses_present-continuous.htm

http://www.englishtenses.com/tenses/present_continuous

Acknowledgements:

We would like to express our gratitude to Li Man Yee for sending the project team her original lesson plan and allowing us to make modifications to it.

Acknowledgements:

The copyright of the learning materials belongs to The Education University of Hong Kong.
