The students have to design their ideal school and present their ideas to their classmates. Compare-and-contrast is used as a teaching strategy to strengthen students’ understanding of the structure of the relative clause. The following big TV guess game requires students to guess what the pictures are about by listening to the verbal descriptions made by their classmates. The students are more motivated to learn grammar in a game. Games are student-centred activities and require active involvement of learners. In the main task, the students are asked to create their own dream school using relative clauses. Creative writing can motivate students’ learning interest and develop their creativity and imagination.

Level of Students: Junior Secondary

Lesson Duration: 120 minutes

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this unit, students should be able to:

Use relative pronouns (which, who) to describe people or things related to school.

Use the relative adverb where to give additional information about the rooms and places at school.

Design their ideal school and present their ideas.

Lesson Plan: Relative Clause (Junior Secondary)

Teaching Materials:

Worksheet

PPT

Useful Websites:

http://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/en/english-grammar/clause-phrase-and-sentence/verb-patterns/relative-clauses

https://www.ego4u.com/en/cram-up/grammar/relative-clauses

http://www.perfect-english-grammar.com/relative-clauses.html

http://www.myenglishpages.com/site_php_files/grammar-lesson-relative-clauses.php

Acknowledgements:

We would like to express our gratitude to Wong Tsz Yu for sending the project team her original lesson plan and allowing us to make modifications to it.

The copyright of the learning materials belongs to The Education University of Hong Kong.
